Many examples of engineering can be found throughout history, from ancient monuments to modern technology. For example, the ancient Egyptians credit Imhotep for building the step pyramid at Saqqara. Imhotep's step-pyramid was built in the third millennium BC. After his death, the Egyptians honored him with a deification. You may have heard of this ancient Egyptian engineer, but did you know that he was also a deified god?

Ancient engineering monuments

Many ancient engineering monuments are testaments to human talent. The monuments of ancient Egyptian civil-military engineers include the Pharos in Alexandria, the Pharos of Alexandria, and the Ziggurats of Mesopotamia. Acropolis in India and Indus Valley are just two examples of ancient engineering landmarks. Monuments like the Colosseum and Acropolis were left by ancient Roman and Greek engineers. The impressive structures built by Mayan civil engineers include the drainage systems and aqueducts at Teotihuacan (Mexico). Al-Jazari (a Turkish engineering monument) was built using five water pumping machines to serve the Artuqid monarchs. Other engineers, such as Mechanics created the concepts of gears and escapement mechanisms.

The origins of mechanical engineering date all the way back to the 5th millennium BC in Mesopotamia. The field has expanded greatly over the years, encompassing everything from automobiles to energy conversion to microelectromechanical systems. The history of mechanical engineering teaches that it was never as simple as it is today. It doesn't matter whether you are interested manufacturing equipment, automobiles or energy conversion; mechanical engineering has influenced many aspects in our lives.

Electrical engineering in the early days

After World War I the relationship between government and electrical engineers was complicated. Although radio was used for communication during wartime, this new technology required strict government regulation. In 1917, the United States government took control of all wireless stations, arguing that the radio spectrum was too valuable to leave uncontrolled. This led to a technological boom that transformed the way we communicate. Today, you can see the history of electricity in New York City and elsewhere.

Radio technology at the beginning

In the early 1900s, radios were used for simplex communications. Morse Code, which was similar to the code used for writing, was used to send messages. These communications were one-way, and it was impossible to speak over them. Despite limitations in early radios, the idea to send electrical waves over vast distances was groundbreaking. Without a new technology, long-distance phone lines were not possible.


Early electric generators

The first electric generator was a feat of engineering. It made it possible for small amounts of work to produce electricity. During the 1880s, hydraulic mines in the Sierra Nevada started experimenting with hydroelectric power. Almarian Decker was an engineer with the Brush arches light company, and had just moved to California from his native country. He integrated generation, transmission, and power in the first redlands three-phase alternate-current plant.

In the West, early electrical engineering

The 19th century is the beginning of electrical engineering's history. Alexander Graham Bell (and Thomas Edison) were the two most influential people in the sector at this time. These two men became the first to specialize as engineers in electricity, and electricity spread quickly. The world was transformed by the growth of the electric industry. Governments became major employers of electrical engineers. While the TVA was the most famous of government initiatives in this area, local governments also provided service and power.

What does an average day look like for an engineer in his/her daily life?

They may also be involved in the creation of new technologies, such as computers, phones, and cars, planes or rockets.

They will often need to sit down and think of new ideas. They will also be required to test their prototypes and ideas with tools such as laser cutters and CNC machines, 3D printers and laser cutters, computer-aided designs software and other equipment.

How long does an Engineer take?

How to Use an Engineering Ruler

Engineers use an engineering ruler to measure distances. Engineers have been measuring distances since ancient times. Around 3000 BC, the first measurement device was invented.

We still use rulers in the modern age, but their usage has changed. A metric ruler is the most popular type of ruler. These rulers have a marking in millimeters (1 mm to 0.039inches). The most common shape of metric rulers is rectangular. They also come in many sizes. Some rulers include millimeters, centimeters, or graduations. For example, 1 cm equals 2.54 mm.

Today, you probably won't see any engineers using a traditional mechanical ruler. They would use a digital version, which measures in millimeters.
